Turkey Creek Sanctuary, Nature preserve with hiking trails in Palm Bay, Florida
Turkey Creek Sanctuary is a nature preserve in Palm Bay, Florida, made up of wetlands, upland forest, and a stretch of creek shoreline. Wooden boardwalks and marked dirt trails run through the area, some elevated above the water to give a clear view of the creek below.
The sanctuary was set aside in the 1980s as Palm Bay expanded rapidly and natural land around the city was being cleared for development. Local efforts pushed to protect this stretch of creek and forest before it disappeared under new construction.
Turkey Creek itself runs along the edge of the sanctuary and is a known fishing spot for locals who come on weekday mornings with rods and folding chairs. The creek gives the place a lived-in feel that goes beyond simple trail walking.
The sanctuary has several entry points, and restrooms are available at the nature center near the main entrance. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, especially after rain, since some of the dirt trails can get muddy.
The eastern part of the sanctuary has noticeable hills and elevation changes, which is unusual for Florida, a state known for being almost entirely flat. This hilly section has trails used by mountain bikers, giving that part of the preserve a completely different feel from the creek-side boardwalks.
