Crescent City, city in Florida, United States
Crescent City is a small town in Putnam County situated between several lakes and known for its quiet streets. It has around 1,700 residents and sits on Crescent Lake, one of Florida's largest freshwater lakes, with over 200 historic buildings, some more than 100 years old.
The town was incorporated in 1883 after a man named Charles Griffing bought land around the lake and attracted other settlers. A major freeze in the 1890s damaged citrus crops and slowed the economy, but the town recovered and retained several buildings from that era, including the Hubbard House from the 1870s.
The town takes its name from the crescent shape of the lake that the early settlers observed. The community maintains close neighborhood bonds today through regular gatherings and shared activities like tree planting and park maintenance.
Visitors can use boat ramps at Crescent Lake and Lake Stella for fishing and boating, with catches including bass, blue crabs, and crappie. The casual restaurant 3 Bananas on the lake offers relaxed waterfront dining, while nearby parks and trails at Dunns Creek State Park provide additional outdoor options.
Early visitors arrived by steamer boats traveling up the St. Johns River and into the lake, making the place a popular travel destination. This mode of transportation shaped the town's development and made it an important stop for water travelers from across the region.
