Greater Orlando, Metropolitan statistical area in Central Florida, US
Greater Orlando is a metropolitan statistical area in Central Florida spanning Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, with three principal cities: Orlando, Kissimmee, and Sanford. The region covers 4,012 square miles (10,391 square kilometers) and is home to around 2.6 million people.
The region started in 1950 as a single-county metropolitan area and grew gradually as additional counties joined over time. Lake County was added in 1992, creating the current four-county structure.
The name Orlando honors a historical figure, while each of the three main cities offers its own center with restaurants, parks and leisure facilities. Visitors find local markets and neighborhoods in each city that reflect everyday life for residents.
The area is accessible through two international airports, and the SunRail commuter system connects several locations across the region. Interstate 4 and Florida's Turnpike serve as the main highways crossing through the different counties.
The area houses major defense contractors as well as food processing facilities that exist alongside the citrus industry. Several production centers still process fruit grown across the region today.
