Palm Coast, Residential city in Flagler County, Florida
Palm Coast is a residential city in Flagler County on the Atlantic coast of Florida. The urban area covers around 42,000 acres with an extensive network of freshwater and saltwater canals running between housing developments and pine forests.
The city began in 1969 when a development company started turning swampland into a planned residential area with thousands of home lots. Within a few decades the landscape changed completely, and the swamps became ordered subdivisions with canals.
The canals run through nearly every neighborhood and give residents direct access to the water, where many moor small boats or kayaks. On some afternoons you see anglers along the canal banks or neighbors chatting across backyard fences.
Most paths follow the canals, so getting around on foot or by bicycle is easy to navigate. Sun protection is important because Florida is often hot and humid, especially between May and September.
The canal system is designed so that nearly every lot has direct water access, which is unusual for an inland city. Many houses have private docks for boats even though they sit several miles from the open ocean.
