Edward Waters University is a private higher education institution in Jacksonville, Florida, located on a campus near the city center. Centennial Hall stands as one of the oldest buildings on the grounds and has been protected as a historic landmark for decades.
The institution was founded in 1866 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church as the first independent college of its kind in Florida. It was created to provide formerly enslaved people with access to higher education.
