Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center, hospital in Georgia, United States
Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center was a hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, with 466 beds for patient care. The facility housed specialized units including trauma care, neurointensive care, and a neonatal intensive care unit for high-risk newborns.
The facility was founded in 1901 as a small infirmary by pastor Len Broughton, starting with only five beds and one doctor. Throughout the 20th century it expanded significantly, relocated multiple times, added a helipad, and became part of Tenet Healthcare in 1997 before being acquired by Wellstar Health System in 2016, ultimately closing in late 2022.
The facility has been closed since late 2022 and no longer operates for patient care. The 22-acre campus is currently being prepared for a new development project with demolitions scheduled to begin in 2025, making visitor access unavailable.
The facility earned recognition as the oldest predominantly Black teaching hospital association in the South and trained many Black physicians and nurses. Its closure symbolizes the ongoing struggle for equitable healthcare access in underserved neighborhoods, with the hospital's closing overwhelming nearby emergency rooms and sparking calls for stronger safeguards against future hospital closures.
