Underground Atlanta, Shopping center in Five Points, Atlanta, United States.
Underground Atlanta is a shopping center in Five Points, located beneath the current street level in downtown Atlanta, that stretches across several blocks and houses retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment options distributed across two separate floors. The upper floor connects directly to modern pedestrian zones, while the lower floor descends to the original streets from the 19th century.
In the 1920s, the city built elevated roadways over railroad tracks, leaving the original storefronts below the new street level and unused for decades. During the 1960s, efforts began to reopen these hidden areas as commercial and tourist spaces.
The retail complex maintains architectural elements from the 1800s, including decorative brickwork, granite archways, marble details, and cast-iron columns throughout its corridors.
The complex sits next to Five Points MARTA station, offering easy access to public transit in the city center. The corridors and areas are well-lit, but the lower floors can be cool, so a light jacket is helpful.
Gas lamps and cobblestones from the old street level still remain on the lower floor, showing how the streets appeared before the elevated roads were built. In some spots, you can still see original curbs and doorways that once opened directly onto the street.
