University Park-Emory Highlands-Emory Estates Historic District, Historic residential district in Decatur, United States.
The University Park-Emory Highlands-Emory Estates Historic District is a residential area in Decatur containing some 196 houses across 85 acres near Emory University. The homes display a mix of Colonial Revival, Craftsman bungalows, and English Vernacular cottages arranged along tree-lined streets.
Development began in 1916 with the University Park tract, followed by Emory Highlands in 1923 and Emory Estates in 1925 as separate residential projects. The area achieved national recognition when listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
The neighborhood displays three separate residential subdivisions, each maintaining its own character while contributing to a cohesive whole. Walking through the streets, you can observe how the different building styles sit comfortably alongside one another and create a unified residential environment.
The district spreads across several streets including Emory Drive, Ridgewood Drive, Burlington Road, and Emory Circle in the educational zone near Atlanta. Walking is the best way to explore the area and appreciate the architectural details of individual homes and the tree-lined character of the streets.
Architects O.F. Kauffman and J.T. Nash designed the residential plan by integrating different housing styles while maintaining consistent building elements throughout. This approach created a neighborhood where varied architectural languages blend together harmoniously without any single style dominating.
