Penn School Historic District is an educational campus on St. Helena Island with multiple buildings from the school's founding period. The grounds include classrooms, staff housing, workshops, and a museum.
The site was founded in 1862 as one of the first schools for freed enslaved people and continued operating until 1948. Then the institution transformed into Penn Community Services.
The York W. Bailey Museum displays objects that document the history of African American education and Gullah heritage. Visitors can see how the community has preserved its traditions here.
The grounds are located on St. Helena Island and can be visited during regular hours. Visitors can take guided tours through the museum and historic buildings.
During the 1960s, the grounds served as a meeting place for Civil Rights leaders. Initial planning for major national events took place here.
