Florida Coastal School of Law, law school in Jacksonville, Florida
Florida Coastal School of Law was a private, for-profit law school in Jacksonville, Florida, offering a Juris Doctor degree as its primary program. The campus sat on the south side of the city near Baypine Road, in a modern building complex next to a small lake.
The school was founded in 1996 and became part of the InfiLaw System, a group of for-profit law schools backed by a private equity firm. It closed in 2021 after the American Bar Association withdrew its accreditation following years of declining enrollment and financial trouble.
The Florida Coastal School of Law was one of the few for-profit law schools in the southeastern US and drew students who had not been accepted elsewhere. Its existence sparked ongoing debate about access to legal education and the role of private schools in the profession.
The campus is located on the south side of Jacksonville and has been vacant since the school shut down, so there is nothing to visit on site. If you pass by the area, the building is visible from the road but closed to the public.
Although the school was known for low admission standards, its moot court teams reached high placements in national competitions, which surprised many observers. The school also offered certificate programs in sports law and environmental law, which were rare for an institution of its size at the time.
