Otranto Plantation

Otranto Plantation is a historic house in Hanahan with a rectangular shape, gable roof, and stuccoed brick walls. The building features a colonnaded piazza with columns that wraps around three sides, creating a distinctive covered outdoor space for the household.

The house was built before 1778, making it one of the older structures in the area. It was destroyed by fire in 1934 but later rebuilt using historical photographs as a guide to restore its original form.

The house displays Greek Revival design that reflects agricultural life in the Lowcountry during its era. Visitors can observe how the architecture and layout reveal the social structure and daily routines of a plantation household.

The property covers less than one acre, making it easy to explore during a brief visit. A separate wooden servants' house stands on the grounds and can be viewed as part of your tour.

The property received recognition in 1978 under three separate criteria for historical importance when added to the National Register. This triple qualification demonstrates how the building's history and architectural value span multiple areas of significance.
