Hunting Island Light

Hunting Island Light is a conical tower constructed from cast iron on the outside and brick on the inside, rising about 136 feet above the shoreline. A spiral staircase with 167 steps climbs to the observation platform at the top.

This lighthouse was built in 1875 following delays caused by the Civil War. It was designed to guide ships along the dangerous coastal route between Charleston and Savannah.

This lighthouse stands as a symbol of South Carolina's coastal heritage and draws visitors interested in maritime traditions. Its presence shapes how people experience the shoreline and connect with the region's seafaring past.

The lighthouse building itself is currently closed due to restoration work, but visitors can explore the surrounding park and grounds freely. Wear sturdy shoes and check tide conditions if you plan to walk the coastal paths.

The structure was built with a segmented cast-iron design that allows it to be completely taken apart and reassembled elsewhere. This feature proved invaluable when coastal erosion threatened the building and it had to be relocated.
