South Carolina Lowcountry, Coastal region in South Carolina, United States.

The South Carolina Lowcountry is a coastal region in the state of South Carolina and covers several counties such as Charleston and Beaufort along the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape consists of wide salt marshes, barrier islands, and a network of tidal creeks and rivers.

The region developed during colonial times as a center for rice and indigo farming, supported by enslaved labor and maritime trade through Charleston's harbor. These plantations shaped the economy and social structure of the coast for centuries.

Gullah communities preserve their West African roots through a distinct Creole language and traditional crafts such as sweetgrass basket weaving. In small coastal villages, these centuries-old skills remain visible and practiced by local artisans who work near roadsides and markets.

US Highway 17 connects the main towns across this region and provides access to wildlife refuges and historic sites along the coast. Many trails and boat landings lie directly on this main road or via short side roads.

The area includes over 500,000 acres (roughly 200,000 hectares) of salt marsh underlaid by black, sticky mud known as pluff mud, which releases a characteristic odor. This mud provides habitat for numerous marine creatures and birds and shapes the entire coastal ecosystem.
