Mount Pleasant is a coastal town in Charleston County, South Carolina, and extends along Charleston Harbor and the Wando River at roughly 3 meters above sea level. Residential neighborhoods alternate with waterfront paths that open onto harbor views and water surfaces.
The settlement began in 1680 under the leadership of Captain Florentia O'Sullivan and was first known as North Point, later as Greenwich. The town received its current name in 1803.
Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum displays the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier and presents exhibits about United States naval forces through different periods. Visitors can walk aboard and explore the decks as well as the command center.
The Arthur Ravenel Bridge connects the town to Charleston and provides direct access to the international airport located about 12 miles (19 kilometers) to the northwest. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the bridge while taking in harbor views.
Scanlonville is a distinct freedmen community that arose after the Civil War through cooperative land acquisition following Robert Scanlon's land purchase. This settlement persists today and preserves its origins as a self-governed community.
