Grand Strand, White sand beach in South Carolina, US.
Grand Strand is a coastal stretch in eastern South Carolina that runs along the Atlantic shoreline and features wide sandy beaches with low dunes and scattered patches of beach grass. The shoreline runs relatively straight, interrupted only by small inlets and the mouths of several rivers meeting the ocean.
The area served originally as a hideout for pirates and was later used as a British colonial settlement before the first hotel built in 1901 marked the start of tourism. The coastal region grew into a popular destination during the 20th century and attracted visitors from across the inland South.
North Myrtle Beach maintains the tradition of shag dancing, a regional swing dance style that reflects the coastal social heritage.
Water temperature is suitable for swimming from May through September, while summer months bring the highest visitor numbers. Outside peak season you find less crowded sections and milder weather for walks along the coast.
The region hosts more than 30 themed miniature golf courses and holds the title Mini Golf Capital of the World. Many of these courses display elaborate decorations with waterfalls, replica volcanoes, and architectural reproductions from different countries.
