WIS TV Tower, Television tower in Lugoff, South Carolina.
WIS TV Tower is a television transmission structure in Kershaw County built from steel framework and guy-wires. Standing at 465.1 meters tall, it serves as the broadcasting antenna for the NBC-affiliated WIS-TV station and FM radio services.
Kline Iron and Steel completed this broadcasting tower in 1958, making it the tallest structure east of the Mississippi River at that time. The new facility allowed the local television station to reach significantly more viewers than before.
The tower allowed the WIS-TV station to broadcast news to the region, connecting communities through shared programming. For decades, this transmission point shaped how people received information about events affecting their daily lives.
The tower stands on private property and is not open to the public since it remains an active broadcasting facility. You can view and photograph the structure from nearby roads and surrounding areas.
The facility houses an extensive film archive containing more than one million feet of original 16-millimeter footage documenting South Carolina events from 1959 through 1978. This collection captures everyday and significant moments from the state's past that might otherwise have been lost.
