American Conservatory Theater

The American Conservatory Theater is a theater company and educational institution in downtown San Francisco that presents performances and runs training programs throughout the year. The organization operates several performance spaces used for both professional productions and student presentations.

The organization was founded in 1965 and received the Regional Theatre Tony Award in 1979 in recognition of its work. Over the decades it grew into one of the leading addresses for theater training on the West Coast.

The Master of Fine Arts programs draw actors from different countries who train here over several years and often appear in public performances. Rehearsals take place in the same rooms where audiences sit in the evening, allowing teaching and daily theater life to overlap closely.

The performance spaces are located in the central city area and are easy to reach by public transport. Evening shows usually begin between 7 and 8 PM, while matinees take place in the afternoon.

Many graduates of the programs later work at major stages in New York and Los Angeles. Some productions are developed here first before being shown at other venues.
