Gilroy Gardens, Steel roller coaster in Gilroy Gardens, California.
Quicksilver Express is a steel roller coaster in Gilroy Gardens, California, that runs along a 652-meter track through artificial rocks and tunnels. The ride reaches a top speed of about 32 mph and uses two chain lifts to pull the cars through the circuit.
The coaster was built by D.H. Morgan Manufacturing in 1995 but remained unfinished for five years. It arrived at Gilroy Gardens in 2000 and opened in 2001 when the park itself began welcoming visitors.
The name recalls the mercury mines that once supplied Northern California during the Gold Rush era. Rocks and artificial formations along the track recreate the look of an old mining tunnel, connecting riders to California's industrial past.
The trains have five cars that can carry up to 30 riders in total, providing a capacity of about 1,400 people per hour. The ride suits families well, as the speed and height remain manageable for younger children.
This roller coaster is the only mine-themed model ever built by D.H. Morgan. Two chain lifts at heights of 27 and 38 feet (8 and 12 meters) raise the cars twice during the ride, instead of relying on one large climb.
