Grgich Hills Estate, Family winery in Rutherford, Napa Valley, US
Grgich Hills Estate is a winery in Rutherford, in the heart of Napa Valley, California, producing wines from its own certified organic vineyards. The range covers Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Zinfandel, sourced from several growing areas across the valley.
The estate was founded in 1977 by Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, shortly after Grgich's Chardonnay won at the 1976 Paris tasting. That result drew international attention to Napa Valley wines and gave Grgich the platform to launch his own label.
Many visitors notice that the winemaking style at Grgich Hills reflects the Croatian traditions Mike Grgich brought with him when he emigrated. During tastings, the focus is on balance and fruit expression rather than heavily oaked or overly processed flavors.
Tastings are available both indoors and outdoors, so visitors can choose based on the weather or their preference. The Napa Valley Wine Train stops directly at the property, making it an option for those who prefer not to drive.
Mike Grgich was born in Croatia and learned winemaking in Europe before emigrating to California, bringing a perspective shaped by two very different wine cultures. The Chardonnay that won in Paris was actually made at Robert Mondavi Winery, where Grgich worked before starting his own estate.
