Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Independent biomedical research institute
The Buck Institute for Research on Aging is a research institute in Novato, California that focuses on understanding aging and age-related diseases. The campus features multiple laboratory and office buildings designed by architect I. M. Pei, arranged around a central hexagonal courtyard with geometric shapes and floating stairs that create an open, modern feel.
The institute was founded in 1999 and was the first in the world dedicated primarily to studying aging and ways to slow it down. Its establishment was made possible by the estate of Leonard and Beryl Hamilton Buck, whose trust continues to provide approximately six million dollars annually to support the research.
Visitors can explore the institute through guided tours and learn about aging research at public talks held regularly throughout the year. The campus is open and welcoming, with the nonprofit organization happy to share its knowledge and discoveries with interested visitors.
Researchers at the institute investigate a drug called rapamycin that may slow some causes of aging, with a private company holding many rights to explore its potential. The institute also started a company called Unity Biotechnology to develop medicines that specifically target age-related illnesses.
