Ulistac Natural Area

Ulistac Natural Area is a 40-acre nature reserve in Santa Clara featuring native California plants, grasslands, and woodlands that border the Guadalupe River. The site includes walking trails and designated viewing spots where visitors can observe the diverse wildlife living in these restored habitats.

This natural area was established in 2001 as the last undeveloped land remaining in Santa Clara. Its creation marked a turning point when the city shifted its focus toward protecting natural spaces within an urban landscape.

This space functions as a place where people learn about the native plants that once covered this region and their role in the local ecosystem. Regular events and volunteer days bring residents together to participate in hands-on conservation work and deepen their connection to the land.

The site is open daily with walking trails suitable for different fitness levels and observation areas for wildlife viewing. Wearing comfortable shoes and bringing water is advisable, and early morning visits offer the best chance to observe animals in their natural behavior.

This land was once almost devoid of wildlife habitat but has been transformed through dedicated restoration work into a thriving ecosystem. The return of butterflies, nesting birds, jackrabbits, and lizards shows how quickly nature can recover when given the space to do so.
