Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, National research laboratory in Berkeley, California, United States
The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a research facility operated by the U.S. Department of Energy in the hills east of San Francisco Bay. The campus includes more than 70 buildings with laboratories for physics, chemistry, materials science, and computing, along with offices for around 4,000 staff members.
Ernest Lawrence founded the laboratory in 1931 as part of the University of California to develop particle accelerators. After World War II, the facility expanded its work into nuclear research and energy technologies.
The laboratory maintains partnerships with universities and research institutions worldwide, fostering international scientific exchange through collaborative research programs and knowledge sharing.
Access to the facility requires prior approval and is mainly intended for scientists with specific research projects. Information about tours and public events can be found online.
Scientists at the laboratory have contributed to the discovery of 16 chemical elements since the 1940s, including berkelium and lawrencium. The facility also operates one of the most powerful synchrotron light sources in the world.
