Dragon Gate, Ceremonial gate in Chinatown, San Francisco, United States.
Dragon Gate is a ceremonial passage with three portals framed by stone columns, decorated with detailed carved elements and traditional Chinese ceramic roof ornaments. The structure straddles the street at Grant Avenue and serves as a prominent entrance marking the heart of the neighborhood.
This gate was built in 1967 and became the first permanent ceremonial structure of its kind established in the United States, reflecting growing community pride. Its construction represented a turning point in how Chinese architecture and heritage gained recognition in America.
The Chinese inscriptions above the portals reflect traditional values about collective well-being and community harmony. The dragon imagery connects to Chinese beliefs about prosperity and protection, shaping how the neighborhood presents itself to visitors.
The gate is located at the intersection of Bush Street and Grant Avenue with convenient access via multiple transit lines. Visitors can explore the area on foot, as the neighborhood offers plenty of shops, restaurants, and other attractions nearby.
Stone guardian lions from Taiwan flank the structure, bringing authentic Eastern presence to the entrance. The roof tiles were specially sourced from the same region and carefully assembled to form the ornamental crown of the gateway.
