Julia Morgan House, Mediterranean Revival mansion in Elmhurst, Sacramento, United States.

The Julia Morgan House is a Mediterranean Revival residence in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Sacramento, California. Its facade is symmetrical, with evenly spaced windows, carved friezes, and metal details, while the interior features teak wood floors and carefully finished surfaces throughout.

A wealthy patron commissioned the house in 1918 as a wedding gift, turning to Morgan at a time when she was already building a reputation across California. She had become the state's first licensed female architect, and this project added to a growing body of work that included substantial private homes.

The carved friezes and metal accents on the facade show the kind of craftsmanship Morgan consistently brought to her residential projects. Inside, the teak wood floors and finished surfaces give a sense of how she approached comfort and quality for the families she designed for.

The house is now managed by Sacramento State University as an event venue, so access to the interior depends on what is scheduled on the day of your visit. It is worth contacting the university in advance to find out which areas are open and whether a visit is possible.

The artisans who made the carved and decorative elements of this house also worked on Hearst Castle in San Simeon, one of Morgan's most celebrated projects. This means the same hands shaped details in a private Sacramento home and in one of the largest private residences ever built in the United States.
