Guy West Bridge

The Guy West Bridge is a steel suspension structure spanning the American River, linking the main Sacramento State University campus with residential areas on the opposite bank. The bridge features a distinctive international orange color and forms a critical pedestrian and vehicle connection across the waterway.

The bridge opened in 1967 and earned recognition as a prize winner in a major steel bridges competition just a year later. Its construction marked an important expansion phase of the university and reflected the building ambitions of that era.

The bridge carries the name of Dr. Guy West, the founding president of Sacramento State University. His legacy remains connected to this important campus landmark that students and staff cross daily.

The bridge is open to pedestrians and vehicles and can experience significant foot traffic during campus hours. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer a quieter experience compared to midday when the campus is most active.

The bridge contains six discharge pipes extending from its first tower that channel stormwater from the eastern campus directly into the American River. This engineering feature demonstrates how the structure serves functions beyond simple transportation.
