Cobb, Census-designated place in Lake County, California.
Cobb is a census-designated place in Lake County, set in the mountains of northern California at an elevation of around 800 meters (about 2,600 feet). State Highway 175 runs through it, linking it to nearby communities in the surrounding area.
The settlement takes its name from John Cobb, who established himself in the valley in the 1850s. A post office opened in 1911, marking a point at which the community had grown enough to support regular mail service.
The Mountain of Attention Sanctuary is a meditation center located in the hills around Cobb, open to visitors who want to take part in contemplative programs. It is one of the few places of this kind in the region and draws people looking for a setting devoted to spiritual practice.
Cobb is most easily reached by car via State Highway 175, which passes directly through the area. If you plan to explore the surrounding forest land, keep the season in mind, as mountain roads in this part of California can be harder to drive in winter.
Cobb sits above The Geysers geothermal field, one of the largest active geothermal areas in the world, which generates electricity for a large part of the region. This underground activity shapes the landscape and explains the presence of sulfur springs found in the surrounding area.
