Arminius Hotel, United States historic place
The Arminius Hotel is a brick building with Renaissance Revival architecture located on Morrison Street in Portland. It features regularly spaced windows, arches, and details that show its solid structure and the craftsmanship of the early 1900s.
The building was designed by architect Otto Kleeman in 1904 and built by the General German Aid Society. It was created after the society abandoned its original plan to construct a hospital.
The hotel carries the inscription A.D.U.G., standing for the General German Aid Society. This name reflects how a German-American community in Portland built this place as both a meeting point and a way to support their own.
The hotel sits on a corner lot at SE 11th Avenue and Morrison Street, making it easy to locate. Being near shops and restaurants gives you convenient access to explore the surrounding historic neighborhood.
The original gymnasium used by German immigrants once stood behind the hotel and was later replaced by the Deutsches Haus community center. This shift shows how the German community in Portland reorganized itself throughout the 20th century.
