Zigzag Glacier, Alpine glacier on Mount Hood, Oregon
Zigzag Glacier extends from 10,200 to 7,200 feet elevation on Mount Hood's southwest slopes, covering 190 acres with a length of 1.5 miles.
The glacier's first documented exploration occurred in 1845 when Joel Palmer traversed its slopes during his expedition of Mount Hood's terrain.
The glacier forms part of Mount Hood Wilderness, where scientists regularly monitor ice formations to understand regional climate patterns and water resources.
Experienced hikers can access the glacier through an off-trail route starting at Timberline Lodge, reaching elevations of 8,000 feet in steep terrain.
In 1922, the glacier produced a jökulhlaup where dark debris flowed from a crevasse, causing local residents to mistake it for a volcanic eruption.
