Zigzag Glacier, Alpine glacier on Mount Hood, Oregon
Zigzag Glacier is an ice formation on Mount Hood's southwest slopes that stretches across multiple elevations from the higher peaks downward. Its surface displays visible crevasses and features that become pronounced as you approach from lower elevations.
The glacier was first documented in 1845 when an explorer traversed Mount Hood's slopes during an expedition through the region. The ice formation has transformed over time as recorded by hikers and researchers who have visited since then.
The glacier sits within Mount Hood Wilderness, where visitors can observe its bright ice fields from several hiking trails on clear days. Scientists monitor the ice formation to track changes in regional climate and water availability.
Reaching the glacier requires hiking experience and off-trail skills, as there is no marked path directly to it. The steep terrain and elevation changes demand good fitness and preparation, particularly during warmer months when conditions are changeable.
In 1922, dark ice debris suddenly flowed from a crevasse in an unusual event that made local residents fear a volcanic eruption. This occurrence helped scientists understand how glaciers move water and sediment across the mountain.
