Coalman Glacier

Coalman Glacier sits on the southern face of Mount Hood and extends between 11,200 and 10,500 feet in elevation. The ice formation creates a defined section that guides climbers along their upward route.

The glacier received its name from Elija Coalman, a mountain guide who completed more than 580 ascents of Mount Hood. His name marks his legacy as an experienced climber in this region.

The glacier serves as a key reference point for mountaineers ascending Mount Hood's south route, featuring the notable Hogsback snow ridge formation.

Technical ice climbing equipment is necessary to reach and travel on this glacier. The ascent follows the southern climbing route, which begins at Timberline Lodge.

Its position beneath Crater Rock creates shadow effects that influence how the ice forms and changes with the seasons. This natural shading makes it an interesting subject for observing glacier movement patterns.
