Sandy Glacier Caves, Glacier caves system on Mount Hood, Oregon, United States

Sandy Glacier Caves is a system of interconnected ice caves nestled within the Sandy Glacier on Mount Hood. Three main passages named Snow Dragon, Pure Imagination, and Frozen Minotaur wind through the frozen interior, creating a network of icy tunnels and chambers.

The cave system was discovered in 2011 when mountaineers Eddy Cartaya and Brent McGregor explored the area after watching a YouTube video by Gregory Fowler. This find opened the location to scientific research into how glaciers change over time.

Scientists and photographers document the caves to study glacial deterioration, providing insights into climate change effects on mountain environments.

Visiting requires crampons, ice axes, and mountaineering experience since the ice is slippery and falling rocks pose a constant hazard. Winter provides the most stable conditions for safe exploration of these frozen passages.

The caves harbor surprising biodiversity including fir tree seedlings, duck feathers, and specialized microorganisms that survive in extreme cold. These unexpected discoveries reveal that even frozen environments can support adapted life forms.
