Tahoma Glacier, Glacier at Mount Rainier, Washington, United States
Tahoma Glacier spans 1.2 square miles on Mount Rainier's western flank, descending from 14,200 feet to 5,500 feet through multiple elevation zones.
The glacier's ice mass of 4.3 billion cubic feet has shaped the regional landscape throughout centuries, creating the South Puyallup River and Tahoma Creek.
Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest regarded the glacier as part of their sacred mountain, which they named Tahoma before European settlement.
Climbers access the glacier via the Nisqually entrance of Mount Rainier National Park, following the Wonderland Trail to reach the technical climbing sections.
The glacier splits into two distinct arms around Glacier Island, with one continuing west-southwest while the southern arm extends toward South Tahoma Glacier.
