Mason County, Administrative division in Washington State, US.
Mason County covers a diverse terrain of forests and waterways, stretching from the southern part of Hood Canal to numerous bays of Puget Sound.
The territory, established as Sawamish County in 1854 from parts of Thurston County, received its current name Mason County in 1864.
The Simpson Logging Company shaped the local economy through forest products, establishing mills and creating employment opportunities for the growing population.
The county seat of Shelton provides governmental services, while 56 percent of residents work in neighboring Thurston and Pierce counties.
The shift from forestry to prison industry and recreation occurred in the 1980s following restrictions on timber sales to protect spotted owl populations.
