Genesis, Ancient sequoia in Mountain Home Grove, US
Genesis is a giant sequoia growing in Mountain Home Grove, a section of Sequoia National Forest in California. The tree stands at a high elevation and is one of the most clearly named and marked sequoias in the grove.
The tree was discovered in 1887 by William Moore Harrison White and later named after the first book of the Bible by David Dulitz, the manager of Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest. The naming was part of a broader effort to identify and document the most notable trees across the grove.
Genesis is part of a group of named sequoias in Mountain Home Grove whose names come from the Bible or mythology, alongside Adam, Hercules, and Methuselah. These names were chosen deliberately to reflect the age and scale of the trees, and they still shape how visitors experience the grove today.
A short trail from the designated parking area leads directly to the tree, making it easy to reach for most visitors. Summer is the most reliable time to go, as the forest road is generally open and the weather allows for a comfortable walk.
The 2020 Castle Fire damaged Genesis severely enough that its crown is now noticeably lower than it used to be. The fire damage is visible when you look up at the tree, yet it still stands and continues to grow.
