Genesis, Ancient sequoia in Mountain Home Grove, US
Genesis is a giant sequoia located in Mountain Home Grove within Sequoia National Forest and stands at a height of approximately 210 feet (64 meters). The tree sits at an elevation of about 6,600 feet (2,000 meters) and is part of the protected collection of named sequoias in this forest area.
William Moore Harrison White discovered this tree in 1887, and David Dulitz, manager of Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest, named it after the first book of the Bible. The naming was part of a systematic effort to identify the most notable sequoias within the grove.
Genesis is part of Mountain Home Grove's collection of named sequoias that follow religious and mythological naming patterns, alongside Adam, Hercules, and Methuselah. This naming tradition reflects how early visitors and forest managers viewed these trees as embodying grand and timeless qualities.
A short trail of roughly 330 feet connects the designated parking area to the tree, making it accessible to visitors of different fitness levels. Summer is the best time to visit when the forest road is reliably open and weather conditions are most stable.
This tree was significantly altered by the 2020 Castle Fire, with its height reduced by roughly 40 feet (12 meters). Despite this damage, Genesis remains a testament to the resilience of these ancient giants in the face of natural forces.
