Hercules, Giant sequoia in Mountain Home Grove, California, US
Hercules is a giant sequoia in Mountain Home Grove, California, featuring a hand-carved interior chamber. The hollow room measures approximately 12 feet (3.7 meters) in diameter and 9 feet (2.7 meters) high, with a wooden door providing access.
Jesse Hoskins, a Lindsay rancher, purchased the land containing this tree in 1884 and carved out the interior chamber between 1897 and 1902. He initially intended the hollowed space to serve as living quarters.
The tree was named as part of a tradition where the grove owner marked sequoias with wooden plaques bearing names from classical and biblical sources. This practice reflected the interests of the time and gave each tree a distinct identity that visitors could recognize.
The tree is located within a protected forest area accessible by hiking trails. Late spring through early fall offers the easiest access, as mountain roads in the area are generally clearer during these months.
The carved interior was later converted into a gift shop selling redwood souvenirs until a fire damaged the tree in September 1984. This change of purpose shows how the site adapted over time to meet different needs.
