Black Mountain Grove, Protected sequoia forest in Tulare County, California.
Black Mountain Grove is a protected sequoia forest in Tulare County containing over 500 large trees across 3,310 acres of land. The grove sits between the Middle and South Forks of Tule River in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Logging operations affected the grove until 1987 when environmental advocates filed a lawsuit to stop timber harvesting. A settlement agreement in 1990 drastically limited further tree cutting in the area.
The grove sits partly on Tule River Indian Reservation land, connecting natural preservation with indigenous territorial heritage that visitors can observe while walking through the area. This relationship shapes how the forest is viewed and used by the community today.
Access is gained through forest roads or hiking trails at elevations up to 6,400 feet (1,950 meters). Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and plenty of water for the journey.
The grove ranks among the six largest sequoia groves globally and stretches across an impressive length. Many visitors overlook how this exceptional size makes it one of the most significant sequoia habitats in existence.
