Mountain Home Grove, Ancient sequoia forest in Sierra Nevada, California
Mountain Home Grove is a forest of giant sequoias in the Sierra Nevada, home to some of the largest trees on Earth, with heights exceeding 200 feet (60 meters) and trunk widths surpassing 25 feet (7.5 meters). The trees stand densely packed with thick, reddish bark rising from massive root systems to towering crowns.
Intensive logging in the late 1800s removed many of the grove's largest trees, including one called the Centennial that was then considered the world's biggest. This period of heavy cutting permanently changed the composition of the forest.
This place held seasonal camps where Native Americans gathered resources and hunted for thousands of years. Walking through today, you can sense how people adapted their lives to this forest landscape.
The area has several campgrounds with picnic tables, fire rings, and drinking water for visitors who want to stay overnight. Plan for mountain trails and bring sturdy shoes plus plenty of water to drink.
The Genesis tree ranked among the seven largest in the grove until a fire in 2020 severely damaged it. The event shows how even these ancient giants remain vulnerable to nature's forces.
