Giant Forest Lodge Historic District, Historic district in Tulare County, United States.
Giant Forest Lodge Historic District was a visitor accommodation area with rustic wooden buildings and cabins in Sequoia National Park, where guests could stay surrounded by massive sequoia trees. The complex comprised several structures that expanded over many decades.
The first development started in 1899 as a tent camp, followed by permanent wooden structures beginning in 1915. The entire facility was dismantled in 1997 to protect the giant sequoias and the forest floor.
The area shows how visitors once stayed in simple wooden buildings surrounded by giant sequoias, reflecting earlier ideas about how people should experience protected forests.
The site is no longer accessible as a visitor facility since the buildings were removed and the area is regenerating. Visitors can walk through the forest on trails in this location but will find no accommodations or structures.
The site is notable because it retained its National Register of Historic Places listing even though all buildings were completely removed. This represents a rare case where environmental protection took precedence over preserving historic structures.
