Generals' Highway Stone Bridges, Stone bridges in Sequoia National Park, US

Description

Generals' Highway Stone Bridges are two arch structures with stone facing that cross the Marble Fork of Kaweah River and Clover Creek in Sequoia National Park. The bridges feature reinforced concrete construction combined with local stone materials to blend with their natural surroundings.

History

These bridges were built in 1931 as part of a highway project linking Sequoia National Park with the General Grant Grove in Kings Canyon. The construction represented an important step in improving access between these two major park areas.

Culture

The architectural design by John Wosky incorporates local stone materials and reinforced concrete barrel arches following National Park Service methods.

Practical

These bridges remain open for vehicle traffic and provide access to various hiking trails and recreation areas throughout the park. Visitors can drive through the park easily while viewing these historical structures along the way.

Did you know?

The two bridges showcase different landscape settings: one crosses a barren canyon while the other spans through dense forest. These contrasting environments show how the structures were adapted to their distinct natural surroundings.
