Alta Peak, Mountain summit in Sequoia National Park, United States.

Alta Peak is a mountain summit in Sequoia National Park that rises to about 11,200 feet in the Sierra Nevada range. From the top, you can see across Kaweah Canyon and the Great Western Divide, a series of high ridges that spreads across the landscape.

The mountain was originally called Tharps Peak until 1896, named after an early settler of the region. The United States Board on Geographic Names changed the official name to Alta Peak in 1928.

The Alta Peak Chapter of the California Native Plant Society conducts research and documentation of rare plant species throughout Tulare County.

The trail starts at the Wolverton parking area and takes you through diverse mountain terrain. This is a long route that demands good preparation and daylight hours, so plan accordingly before you set out.

In winter, the Pear Lake Backcountry Ski Hut at about 9,200 feet serves as a base camp for ski touring in the area. Skiers and hikers use this shelter as a starting point for exploring the extensive terrain around the peak.
