Squatter's Cabin

Squatter's Cabin is a single-room wooden structure built from timber and stone found nearby in the Sierra Nevada. The building stands at Huckleberry Meadow and displays the construction techniques used by early mountain settlers to survive the harsh environment.

The cabin was built in 1886 as part of the Kaweah Colony, a socialist community experiment in the Sierra Nevada. It remains the only surviving building from this settlement, which dissolved in the early 1900s.

The cabin shows how early settlers adapted to mountain life by building with available materials and traditional skills passed down through generations. Visitors can still see this practical approach to construction and the connection between the people and the land.

The cabin is located within Sequoia National Park and accessible by hiking, though it requires some effort to locate on the trail. Visitors should be prepared for mountain conditions with appropriate footwear and layered clothing for changing weather.

The cabin stands as evidence of an unusual 1880s vision of how people could live differently together in a shared community. Few visitors realize this solitary structure represents a radical social experiment that ultimately did not survive.
