Sequoia National Park, National park in Sierra Nevada, California, United States.

Description

Sequoia is a protected area in the mountains of California's Sierra Nevada, covering roughly 1,789 square kilometers. Giant sequoia trees with diameters up to 11 meters and heights around 84 meters define the landscape, alongside deep canyons, granite cliffs and alpine lakes.

History

The United States Congress created this national park on September 25, 1890, in response to the threat from commercial loggers. It became the second national park in the country, meant to save the last large stands of ancient trees from destruction.

Culture

Visitors walk among the largest living trees on Earth, some older than most human civilizations. Standing beside a trunk wider than a small house gives a sense of the slow time of nature, quite different from the rhythm of modern life.

Practical

Access is through two main entrances, with a weekly vehicle pass at 35 dollars also covering entry to neighboring Kings Canyon. Snow blocks many roads in winter, so the season from May to October is best for visiting higher elevations.

Did you know?

Mount Whitney lies within the boundaries and stands at 4,418 meters as the highest peak in the contiguous United States. The climb begins on the east side of the mountain, outside the park, but the summit itself belongs to the protected area.
