North Fork, unincorporated community in California, United States
North Fork is an unincorporated community in Madera County, California, set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It is a small settlement made up of a few local shops, homes, and basic services that support the surrounding rural population.
The settlement grew in the late 1800s around logging and mining activity in the Sierra Nevada foothills. As those industries declined, growth slowed and the community remained a small rural center.
North Fork takes its name from the North Fork of the San Joaquin River, which runs nearby. The area is known today as a stopping point for people heading into the Sierra National Forest, which begins just at the edge of town.
The community sits at around 2,000 feet (610 meters) elevation and is reached by winding rural roads. Anyone planning to head further into the mountains should fill up on fuel and supplies here, as options become fewer the higher you go.
North Fork calls itself the Mushroom Capital of the Nation and holds an annual mushroom festival that draws people from across the region. The surrounding forests are genuinely rich in edible fungi, which makes the area well known among foragers.
