Huntington Lake, Mountain reservoir in Fresno County, California.
Huntington Lake is a mountain reservoir nestled in the Sierra Nevada at 6,955 feet elevation, stretching roughly 7 miles long and 1 mile wide. The water fills a natural basin surrounded by forest and rocky terrain.
The reservoir was built starting in 1912 as part of the Big Creek Hydroelectric Project to generate power for California. It was an important engineering achievement of its era.
The Western Mono people lived in this basin before the water arrived, gathering deer, fish, berries, and nuts from the land. Their heritage remains connected to the area's past and natural character.
Nine campgrounds around the lake offer facilities for tent and vehicle camping with varying amenities and setups. Most locations require booking in advance, especially during warmer months.
A B-24 bomber has rested at the lake's bottom since December 1943, when it crashed during a heavy snowstorm. Only two of the six crew members survived the incident.
