Mount Morgan, Mountain summit in Inyo County, California, United States.
Mount Morgan is a mountain summit in the Sierra Nevada range, located in Inyo County, California, reaching about 13,750 feet (4,190 m). The peak features steep ridges and several false summits that make route-finding a key part of any ascent.
The first recorded ascent was made in 1870 by the Wheeler Survey team, who named the peak after J.H. Morgan, one of its members. The survey was part of a broader effort to map the mountain regions of the American West in the years following the Civil War.
Mount Morgan sits within the John Muir Wilderness, drawing climbers who seek remote, high-elevation terrain far from crowded trails. The area is known among experienced mountaineers as a place where the Sierra Nevada feels raw and unfiltered.
The most common starting point is reached from Highway 395 via Crowley Lake Drive and McGee Creek Road, where a trailhead gives access to the upper routes. Conditions at this elevation can shift fast, so carrying extra layers and starting early in the day is strongly advisable.
Several routes pass through gully systems filled with loose rock, where each step requires careful placement and handhold checks. Between these sections, the terrain briefly opens up and offers steadier ground that gives climbers a moment to reset before the next technical stretch.
