Owens River Gorge

Owens River Gorge is a canyon in the Eastern Sierra Nevada carved through volcanic rock with steep walls and varied geological features. The river flows through narrow passages of red and brown stone formed by ancient volcanic activity.

The gorge was carved over millions of years as the river eroded through volcanic rock in the Sierra Nevada. Mid-20th century water development projects altered the river's flow and reshaped the landscape.

Rock climbers and anglers from various regions gather at the gorge, making it an important meeting point where visitors directly experience the volcanic terrain.

The gorge has several access points leading to different areas with climbing routes and hiking trails. Visitors should be prepared for rough terrain and explore the area in good weather conditions.

Between 1953 and 1991, one section of the gorge ran completely dry due to a water diversion project. When water flow was later restored, fish populations returned and revived the river ecosystem.
