Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is a waterfall about 100 feet high that tumbles over granite rocks and creates multiple cascading streams. From the viewing platform, visitors can observe the fine water patterns that form as the water flows over the stones.

The area was incorporated into the Ansel Adams Wilderness to protect natural features of the Sierra Nevada. This action preserved the remote landscapes of this mountain region for the future.

The forest along the trail shows signs of past wildfires, with charred trees standing beside fresh new growth. Visitors can observe how nature recovers after fires and gradually reclaims the landscape.

The hike starts at stop 9 within the monument and is about 3 miles round trip. Visitors should bring sturdy shoes and plenty of water, as the return path involves a steep uphill climb.

The return path from Rainbow Falls presents an unexpected challenge as hikers must climb back up the same elevation they descended. This demanding finish surprises many visitors with its difficulty.
