Koip Peak, Mountain summit in Ansel Adams Wilderness, Mono County, US.
Koip Peak is a mountain summit in the Ansel Adams Wilderness on the eastern edge of Yosemite National Park. The peak rises with rocky slopes and sits within the high alpine landscape of the Sierra Nevada.
The peak was first documented in 1919 when Walker Huber reached the summit. This ascent marked the beginning of recorded climbing activities on this mountain.
The name Koip comes from the Western Numic language and refers to the bighorn sheep that roam the Sierra Nevada mountains. This connection links the summit to the wildlife that has inhabited these slopes for generations.
Access to the summit starts at Dana Meadows and follows the Koip Peak Trail toward the pass area. The climb requires good fitness and alpine experience due to the elevation and rocky terrain.
A north-facing glacier lies between this peak and the neighboring Kuna Peak. This icy terrain creates a technically demanding route through metamorphic rock that challenges experienced climbers.
