St. Mary's in the Mountains Catholic Church, Catholic church in Virginia City, Nevada.
St. Mary's in the Mountains is a Gothic Revival Catholic church located on South E Street in the historic district of Virginia City, Nevada. The building rises above the surrounding streetscape with a tall bell tower, pointed arches, and stained glass windows.
An earlier church on this site dated to around 1860, during the Comstock mining boom, but it was destroyed in the great fire of 1875. The current stone building was completed in 1876 as the town rebuilt.
Irish immigrant miners made up much of the congregation for generations, and their connection to the church shaped how it fits into the town's identity. The building still holds regular services today, making it a living part of Virginia City rather than just a historic site.
The church sits in the middle of Virginia City's walkable historic district, so it is easy to reach on foot from the main street. Outside of services, visitors can generally walk in and look around the interior at a relaxed pace.
The 1898 pipe organ built by William Schuelke in Wisconsin has a small separate keyboard used only to control the bell chimes. This detail makes it a rare example among church organs of its era.
