South Egan Range Wilderness

South Egan Range Wilderness is a protected mountain landscape in Nevada spanning thousands of acres of ridges and deep valleys. Limestone cliffs rise above pinyon and juniper forests, creating a mix of steep rock faces and softer wooded slopes throughout the terrain.

The wilderness area was formally established through federal legislation in 2006 and placed under management by federal land authorities. Since then it has been preserved as roadless terrain without development.

Mule deer and elk move through the ridges and canyons, shaping the character of this landscape through their daily presence. The wild animals here are woven into the local experience and visitors often encounter them during their time outdoors.

Most visitors reach the area by driving south from the town of Ely and continuing into the foothills. The terrain demands solid footing and preparation, so travelers should bring sturdy gear and ample water.

Within the territory sits Angel Cave, a limestone cave at high elevation that remains largely unexplored by visitors. Few people have ventured into this hidden cavity, making it a mysterious destination.
