Wheeler Peak Campground

Wheeler Peak Campground is a mountain camping area in Great Basin National Park with 37 individual sites positioned at roughly 10,000 feet elevation. The grounds sit within dense forests and overlook the surrounding peaks and valleys of the park.

This camping site was developed to provide access to ancient bristlecone pine groves, which rank among Earth's oldest living organisms. The presence of these remarkable trees made this location an important destination for nature enthusiasts and researchers.

The location provides opportunities to observe natural phenomena, including clear night skies that allow excellent astronomy viewing without interference from city lights.

The access road is narrow and winding, making it unsuitable for vehicles longer than 24 feet. Visitors should prepare for cold nights and bring warm clothing and blankets, as the high elevation causes temperatures to drop sharply after sunset.

This location offers some of the darkest skies in the country, creating exceptional conditions for nighttime stargazing. The absence of light pollution makes the campground a sought-after spot for anyone wanting to observe the stars without urban interference.
